The Charlotte Volunteers in Medicine Clinic Promote Health Information Sessions, Free Screenings and Activities During “Take a Loved One to the Dr. Day”

Charlotte, NC - September 3, 2008 - The Charlotte Volunteers in Medicine Clinic (CVIM) will celebrate “Take a Loved One to the Doctor” day on Tuesday, September 16th at The Greenville Center. Health sessions and screenings will take place between 9am – 3pm located at 1330 Spring Street in Charlotte. “Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day” is part of a national campaign by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services which focuses on the health gap between minority populations and the general population. “Take a loved one to the Doctor Day” is used as a day to encourage individuals to see a health care professional or to make an appointment to see a health care professional and begin taking charge of your health!

In its fifth year of observance, CVIM has screened thousands of patients at this annual event and has accepted more than 500 patients since opening in 2003. Approximately 90% of these patients have hypertension, diabetes or both. Many of these individuals were diagnosed at the “Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day” screening event. Donna Lacey, Executive Director shares, “Our mission is to promote self empowerment through awareness. Our desire is to help those in our community who are medically disenfranchised to get the information they deserve to improve their health. We are committed to providing a means to make this happen with this event and throughout the year.”

This year, community partners include: Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, State Farm Insurance/50 Million Pound Challenge, Prevent Blindness North Carolina, Power to End Stroke/American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, Mecklenburg County Health Department Wise Woman Program, and Fighting Back! (Area Mental Health).

CVIM is dedicated to promoting education and awareness and is encouraging everyone, especially those belonging to racial/ethnic minority groups and live in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County to schedule an appointment and take their loved ones to a health care professional.

(Atlanta, GA) August 14, 2008 -The Joy of Connecting ®, a national women’s networking group headquartered in Atlanta has joined forces with interior designer, Melody Vaughn, Owner of Harmonize Your Home, LLC and host of “Space Invasions” featuring IKEA, to help a local family in need of a home makeover to accommodate the needs of their special needs teenager. The Katz Family resides in the Morningside area of Atlanta and cares for 15 year-old Emily Katz, a quadriplegic since birth. Linda, Emily’s mother, has relentlessly tried to get funding to renovate her home. She even applied for an appearance on the Extreme Home Makeover Show aired on ABC numerous times, and was unsuccessful. Sheg Aranmolate, of Oprah’s “Big Give” will make a personal appearance to endorse this eco-friendly project at the home of CEO/Founder, Bonnie Ross-Parker as part of the sixth anniversary celebration on Saturday, August 16th at noon. Sheg Aranmolate, author of inspirational title iActuate, wholeheartedly supports this project and is thrilled to be part of the “Dream Team” that will make it possible for the Katz family to live functionally. When asked why this project is so endearing, he says, “This project is near and dear to me because of what it stands for. As the co-founder of the Aranmolate Foundation for Deformed Children and a young man who strives to help the less-fortunate, when I read Linda Katz’s letter, I was touched and empowered by her resilience, and it further affirms the reason why the foundation exists - to be a resource to families such as The Katz’s.”

Bonnie Ross-Parker, excited to mark the sixth anniversary celebration with this “Go Green”project shares, “When Linda exhausted her reasonable options, she reached out to me in tears needing help to make her home more functional for her family. I was immediately touched. I just knew I had to help.”

Melody Vaughn created the 24/7 Project when she had a chance encounter with a woman preparing for surgery and looking for a simple renovation solution in her bathroom that would accommodate her needs after surgery. “When I worked as a kitchen designer I met an elderly women that needed to buy a toilet. She was going into the hospital to have her leg amputated and needed to purchase a new toilet. I visited her home to get a better idea of her needs and what a surprise, she needed so much more than just a toilet. It was then I realized people were in need of healing in their homes thru functional design and thus 24/7 Project was born.” she shares.

The 24/7 Project Pay it Forward is a collaborative home makeover project sponsored by The Joy of Connecting ® and HyH, LLC to serve the design needs of families with circumstances that prevent them from making much needed improvements to their home. The 24/7 Project: Healing Homes thru Design through HyH LLC, is an ongoing collaborative project that will award four local qualifying families per year to aid them with necessary home improvements they are unable to undertake.

(Atlanta, Georgia) August 8, 2008 - The Women’s Empowerment International Organization (WEIO), Inc is proud to announce the 1st Annual Gala in the Garden. This exclusive summer chic event is being held to assist the Georgia Cancer Foundation in accomplishing their mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem through prevention, advocacy, research and education. This private event will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2008, at the Park Tavern in Piedmont Park. The Pre-Gala ”Go Green” VIP Mixer is from 7PM-8PM, followed by the main event which will take place from 8PM-11PM. General tickets are $50.00 and VIP tickets are $100.00.

The theme of this event is “Planting Hope – Finding A Cure” in an effort to pay tribute to those who have lost their fight to cancer and those who are fighting the battle. Sue Monderson, Executive Director of WEIO Inc., shares “This event is near and dear to my heart personally. My family understands the emotional complexities of this disease. Our organization would like to be able to share our strength, love and joy with those who are survivors of cancer as well as those who continue to fight the battle. “

Hosted by Kara Wilson from 95.5 The Beat and performances by celebrity guests, the event will include a fashion show, “Couture 4 Cancer Fashion Show”. Participants of the fashion show will be those currently battling cancer as well as survivors of cancer. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Georgia Cancer Foundation.
